The 4th of July 2022

The fireworks began at dark, another 4th of July

The flag waves in the gentle breeze above a moonlit sky

There’s cookouts and parades that go on from east to west

Families gather at the park with “kiss the cook” aprons on daddy’s chest

The little ones have sparklers to lighten the darkened sky

Moms set the table with America’s apple pie

Tis the day we celebrate the freedoms that we share

But this time seems a bit hollow

For many are in despair.

America the beautiful has been wounded over the years

A plague of disease rested over us for long over two years

An election was anything but trusted, there became a great divide.

Lost in all of that was that great American pride

Now we suffer from policies that have truly weakened a nation

The barbecues costing so much more due to high inflation

Gasoline at an all time high, vacation trips postponed

Or maybe even canceled like the culture some have condoned

We’ve become so divided not unlike In Lincoln’s day

So why go to the fireworks show that the town is soon to display

My prayer is that this day can start us all anew

Recognize the beauty and freedom of the Red, White, and Blue

Reach out to your neighbor be they on the left or right

And watch the wonders in the skies on this very night

Don’t give up on the dream of the shining light upon the hill

For after all regardless of color or creed we are all Americans still
